- Where is Vinha das Penicas?
- The cellar is in Podentes, in the Penela municipality, Coimbra district, Portugal. The vines are spread across five parcels in the neighbouring municipalities of Miranda do Corvo and Condeixa-a-Nova, in the Terras de Sicó sub-region of the Beira Atlântico geographical indication.
- Can you visit the vineyards and cellar?
- Yes, but by appointment only. The cellar is small and the work is done by few hands, so tastings and visits are always arranged in advance, by email or phone.
- How can you buy the wines?
- Production is around ten thousand bottles a year and there is no online shop. Direct orders, restaurant listings and distribution are all handled by email, at vinhadaspenicas@gmail.com.
- Are the wines natural?
- They are low-intervention wines. The vineyards are worked by hand and without herbicides, fermentations are spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, nothing is corrected, and sulphur is kept to a minimum and added late. There is no certification, and the label does not use the word.
